Mirrors Project

Inspired by New York Downtown Hospital’s role as the primary receiving hospital on September 11, 2001, artist Anne Beffel has installed over a thousand signal mirrors in the lobby windows. The mirrors resemble the signal mirrors lost pilots use for rescue. Amassed and organized based upon patterns of falling and floating debris, the mirrors become a glistening light field.

Wearing a handmade “mirror dress" and pedaling a bike laden with mirrors, Beffel will be on duty in Lower Manhattan from September 7 to October 7 giving away hundreds of mirrors to Lower Manhattan residents and workers to hang in their windows for reflection and communication. As she moves through the neighborhood, Beffel's dress projects patches of sunlight onto the urban landscape and people with whom she interacts.

Mirror Giveaway Dates: September 7 - October 7, 2006 on Thursdays and Fridays, 3 P.M. - 6 P.M.; Saturdays, 12 - –2 P.M.

Beffel will meet guests by the William Street hospital lobby entrance on the hour and then will circle the hospital and surrounding blocks on a bike.
